About Us

7As College of Science and Technology, now Northern College of Science and Technology is an educational institution born as a community-initiated private-led intervention to address specific human resource needs in Health, Science, and Technology sphere within the Eastern Corridors region and Ghana as a whole.

The desire to make this novel collaborative initiative a reality is what motivated the founder Mr. Nathaniel Adams Jnr. (backed by the Adams family leading to the original name of the school 7As) and supported by the Chiefs and people of Dagbon led by His Majesty Kampakuya-Na Andani Yakubu Abdulai, the then Regent of Dagbon.

This novel developmental intervention was informed by the continuous refusal of some key health personnel such as Medical Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Pharmacists, among others, to accept postings to work in healthcare facilities within and around the Eastern Corridors.

Additionally, the lack of interest in the sciences and technology related courses among the young people within the geographical area is what triggered the establishment of Northern College of Science and Technology in Yendi with an overarching purpose to provide long term solutions to challenges confronting especially science and technology education as well as the delivery of quality healthcare in the Eastern corridors of the Northern and the Oti Regions.

Before establishing Northern College of Science and Technology, only one medical doctor was at post at the Yendi Municipal Hospital, attending to over 300,000 population in the area. The Yendi Municipal Hospital serves as a referral facility for Ghana’s 15 political districts in the Eastern Corridors.

The aim was to provide an enabling environment that would deepen young people’s interest and offer them access to quality science and technology-based education from Basic to Tertiary levels, which is non-existent in the Eastern Corridors of Ghana.

According to the 53rd Annual Conference of the Ghana Association of Science Teachers, students’ enrolment in the sciences in the Northern Regions remained poor. Out of the students who enrolled in the Senior Secondary School, only 10% offered General Science.

This was attributed to the inadequate teaching personnel and the lack of basic tools and equipment in schools’ laboratories and workshops resulting in the inefficiency of teachers to deliver their teaching mandate. The conference called for a consented effort of parents, teachers, and the private sector to improve the situation in the regions.

The purpose of establishing Northern College of Science and Technology, as reiterated earlier, is to provide a long-term solution to these challenges confronting the area through the provision of quality science and technology education to the population living in the Eastern corridors of the Northern Region and Northern part of the Volta Region. The College is planned to provide three levels of education:

Phase 1: Junior High School (already established since 2013)

Phase 2: Senior High School (yet to be established)

Phase 3: Tertiary level School (yet to be established).

Among other things, the College is to have modern-day science and technology equipment to enable the students to have hands-on practical sessions during the course of their studies.

The goal is to have about 80 percent bias in terms of students’ intake at the Senior High School level by offering strictly science-related courses such as General Science, Home Economics, Agricultural Science, and Technical training (Building Construction). At the Tertiary level, the College will offer courses such as Nursing, Allied Science, Medicine, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication, and Architecture.

The College will run well-structured boarding facilities that will be available for students right from the JHS through to the SHS levels. At the Tertiary level, the College will provide hostel facilities for the students. To deepen students’ appreciation of technological education, the College envisages mainstreaming ICT across all the levels of education from JHS to Tertiary and provide a well-resourced ICT laboratory with modern equipment to keep the students abreast with modern technologies in ICT.

To prevent the long waiting period in completing the entire project, a decision was reached to commence the Junior High School to model the concept while the rest of the structural works and other provisions are being worked on for the SHS and Tertiary levels.

The school sits on a 36-acre land of which 6 acres have been fully utilized for the JHS wing of the college. The college provides a disability friendly environment and religious freedom promoting equity, inclusion, discipline and decorum.
